ECCS’09 Satellite Workshop on the 24th September 2009
"Putting Complexity to Work - Supporting the Practitioners"
Aims:
The focus of this one-day workshop is: How to harness the insights coming out of complexity science more effectively? How to put them to work in support of practitioners who deal with complex realities in their day-to-day activity, as in business strategy development; health care; humanitarian aid; social and cultural engagement; local and regional planning; sustainable development etc.
The workshop wishes to bring together practitioners and researchers to discuss how the 'Complexity Community' can better tailor their insights to provide practical, relevant support to Practitioners. We welcome your participation in this workshop and invite you to exchange your experiences with the other communities present and to benefit from and contribute to the insights as they evolve during the workshop.
Workshop Format:
Introductory talks by practitioners and researchers (picking up on success stories and day-to-day engagement in the use of 'complex thinking') will set the scene for facilitated group work, where participants identify the issues involved in 'putting complexity to work'. These may include:
How do practitioners successfully carry out complex tasks without using 'complexity science' - what can complexity scientists learn from practitioners?
What are people's experiences of using complexity science insights and what are still the open questions / challenges? How do you 'convince' people that using insights from complexity science might be beneficial to their 'reality'?
How can businesses and organisations be supported in order to become more dynamic and resilient in changing circumstances?
Which kind of tools might be useful to each of the various communities - and especially which are good in transdisciplinary situations?
The workshop output will be published for use as source material by researchers and practitioners alike.
